Friction hinges offer a simpler, more integrated alternative for lid and cover positioning. Friction hinges provide torque at the point of rotation to hold the lid in any user-defined position with a single component. Gas struts generate a nonlinear force that varies with position, which can create imbalance, and their shorter cycle life rating can lead to replacement as they lose their force over time.
Gas struts can help lift heavy lids or provide additional support for flexible lid designs, but most applications benefit from eliminating the added components. A friction hinge reduces part count, simplifies assembly, and lowers installation and long-term maintenance costs. Eliminating a gas strut also frees up space by removing the strut’s motion envelope and reducing pinch points.
