Friction hinges use controlled internal resistance to hold position throughout the range of motion. They eliminate the need for gas struts or latches, improve safety, and protect components from impact.
Reell delivers globally trusted torque hinges, clutches, springs, and custom motion components engineered to create smooth, precise, long-lasting movement and steady positioning. Engineers specify our product across medical, automotive, commercial, aerospace, and industrial applications to solve common motion challenges and elevate the overall user experience.
For more than 50 years, Reell has specialized in designing precision friction hinges, torque inserts, and position control solutions to help engineers create dependable movement, reliable positioning, and enhance product ergonomics. Our motion components are built to hold position exactly where users expect, eliminate drift, and provide the premium feel demanded in modern product design.
Reell (ray-EL’), a German word meaning honest, trustworthy, and good, is what we built our company values around. With premium, well-crafted, long-lasting products and a skilled design and manufacturing team, we make it our mission to exemplify these values with every friction hinge and precision torque solution we create.
Reell friction hinges, torque inserts, clutches, springs, and custom products feature patented ReellTorq® clip technology and industry-leading construction, ensuring:
Reell’s hinge and motion solutions address common issues engineers face when designing panels, covers, access systems, displays, articulating arms, screens, seating, and more. Our components transmit torque, maintain angular position, reduce slamming, improve safety, and provide users with a smooth, premium tactile feel.
Reell designs and manufactures a wide range of motion control components that deliver the right torque, smooth movement, and long-term reliability in any environment. From friction hinges to precision springs, our product families support demanding use cases across a broad range of industries.

Reell components are found in products around the world because design engineers at industry-leading companies value the reliability of our products and our service.
Position control hinges, torque hinges, or friction hinges use precision-engineered friction elements to ensure your product maintains whatever angle you set it at. The hinge provides consistent resistance throughout its rotation. The result is no drift, no sagging, and no need for additional locking mechanisms for the component to hold its place where the user sets it.
Torque requirements depend on the weight of your panel, mounting location, and range of motion. Our Hinge Selection Guide walks you through the process, or our engineering team can help you spec the perfect solution for your motion challenge.
The type of hinge that holds position with a panel or lid uses built-in torque to resist movement and add support without additional hardware. Options such as constant torque/symmetric hinges or differential torque/asymmetric hinges offer controlled motion and reliable position holding.
Constant torque hinges and differential torque hinges control motion in different ways, depending on how resistance is applied during rotation.
A constant torque hinge (also called a symmetric torque hinge) provides the same resistance in both directions of movement. This creates predictable, uniform motion and allows a panel, lid, or display to hold its position wherever it’s placed.
A differential torque hinge (also called an asymmetric torque hinge) applies different resistance depending on direction. Engineers use this approach when a component should move more easily in one direction—such as lifting a panel—while still resisting motion in the opposite direction to maintain position.
Choosing between constant and differential torque depends on how the user interacts with the product and how the motion should feel during use. With the right hinge and assembly, the result is smooth, controlled motion and a hinge that holds position.
"With our design for the retail stand, we wanted to create a unique merchant-customer point-of-sale experience. Our design, inspired by a teeter-totter, needed a position control hinge that would allow the tablet to remain steady at any position. The reliability and durability of the hinge were critical to long-term performance, and Reell was able to offer exactly what we needed with an industry-leading 50,000 cycles. Throughout the design process, we were able to iterate and efficiently test with quick turnaround times on samples, and we relied on their technical support throughout the project. We’ll definitely turn to Reell in the future for any projects that require position control hinges."

“For decades, music professionals have known tripod bases fail quickly and droop. With the Reell TI-340 torque inserts, those issues have finally been put to rest—in a very impressive way."
Dave Roberts, VP Operations, Latch Lake Music
“Using a Reell MH-14 friction hinge allows the Flipster to hold itself sturdily open in any position without backlash. The glass-filled nylon case and ability to withstand well over 20,000 usage cycles mean the Flipster will retain its precise flipping action for years to come.”

“The overall result is a product family that dramatically increased unit volumes, revenue, and sales margin dollars for A-dec in the first year. This is a great example of partnering with Reell. We will look to Reell products in the future because of their high quality, strong engineering support, and exceptional value.”
Greg Watson, Senior Product Manager at A-dec
“Because of our seating flexibility and adjustment, Reell is an important partner to help us with reliable movement and position control throughout our designs. The DX100 specifically helped our design team create a thin meal tray that became a key touchpoint for our customers and integrates beautifully into our overall design.”
Lars Rinne, CEO of Butterfly Seating
“One of the reasons we chose the Reell torque insert was that they have the same commitment to quality and performance that we do here at Armodilo. The Reell components used inside the Sphere have been cycle tested beyond 20,000 movements, ensuring smooth movement and silent operation. The rugged design of our Sphere tilt mechanisms is just one reason why our products are deployed worldwide and have an industry-only lifetime warranty.”
Iles Guran, Creative Director at Armodilo
